Surface Tension of Serum

چکیده
As stated in previous papers, 1-4 the four essential conditions under which the presence of antibodies in immune serum can be detected and followed by means of what might be termed the tensiometric method are: first, the dilution of the serum to 1:10,000; second, the use of strictly clean vessels; third, the care in handling the solutions, which must absolutely not be disturbed between the two measurements; and fourth, the study of the time-drop, 2 and not merely of the initial value of the surface tension. The first condition is a consequence of the numerous experiments reported in Papers I, 1 II, ~ IV, a and V. * The second has been emphasized in the same papers, and will be referred to again in the present paper. The third condition is satisfactorily fulfilled by the device represented in Fig. 1. However, the main object of this paper is to explain more extensively the reason of the fourth condition. 1. Time-Drop and Initial Value.--The results of a series of ten experiments on rabbits are reported in Text-fig. 1. From its mere inspection, it will be clear that the values of the initiaa surface tension of the solution of immune serum (1 part in volume of serum to 10,000 parts of saline 0.9 per cent) are sometimes higher and some-

Density and Temperature Dependencies of Liquid Surface Tension
In this paper the density and temperature dependencies of surface tension are investigated. Using the Lennard-Jones (12,6), as an effective pair interaction potential, a linear expression is derived for isotherms of g /r2 versus r2 for some normal and ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFCs)</...
متن کاملSurface Tension Prediction of n-Alkanes by a Modified Peng-Robinson Equation of State Using the Density Functional Theory
Through this study, the ability of a modified Peng-Robinson (MPR) equation of state in predicting the surface tension of n-alkanes based on the density functional theory approach was investigated and compared with other studies. The interfacial layer thickness and the density profile were calculated simultaneously at different temperatures from triple point to near critical point using the modi...
متن کاملMODELING SURFACE TENSION AND WALL ADHESION IN MOLD FILLING PROCESS
Abstract: In this study an algorithm for mold-filling simulation with consideration of surface tension has been developed based on a SOLA VOF scheme. As the governing equations, the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible and laminar flows were used. We proposed a way of considering surface tension in mold-filling simulation. The proposed scheme for surface tension was based on the conti...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF OILFIELD CHEMICALS ON THE SURFACE TENSION OF SURFACTANT SYSTEMS
Treated sea water is the most significant source of water and surfactant floods. The various chemicals employed in treatment plants should be compatible with surfactant systems. Based on surface tension experiments, the activity of these chemicals is examined over a wide range of concentrations in different solutions, including distillated water, sea water by using three types of surfactant mix...
متن کاملSpontaneous Decrease of the Surface Tension of Serum. I
1. Over 3,000 measurements of surface tension of sera have been made with the ring method, and they have yielded a new phenomenon, the spontaneous and rapid decrease of the surface tension of a serum in function of the time. 2. Generally, after 10 minutes the surface tension reaches a value which is practically constant. At least, the decrease is very much slower. After stirring, a rise occurs ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Gum Shellac Solution on the Surface Tension of Rabbit Serum
Following the intravenous injection of a gum shellac solution which alters the peripheral blood picture there is an increase in the time-drop of the diluted serum. This is believed to indicate changes in the physicochemical state of the plasma. This gum shellac solution behaves as a surface-active substance; its effect on the surface tension of serum is hindered by the du Noüy phenomenon of ads...
